Weekly Safety Topic – Don’t Be A Risk Taker

Every job has “RISK-TAKERS” – individuals who create danger for themselves and others. Risk-takers differ only in the size of the risks they take. Since so many risk-takers are around, a helpful tip for spotting one is most likely to look into a mirror.

The truth is we’re all guilty of taking risks. Have you ever not buckled your seatbelt in a vehicle? We know it’ll make us safer, but we’re too lazy to do it.

Have you ever worked on a broken, defective ladder, too short, not tied off, or just not the right ladder for the job? Have you ever worked without guardrails or tied off where it was required?

Are you guilty of overloading a crane, hoist, chain fall, etc., or using chains, chockers, or worn or damaged ropes?

Are the gas cans you use at work and home compliant with OSHA and NFPA standards?

Do you risk losing your vision by cutting, grinding, chipping, etc., without wearing safety glasses — damaging your hearing by not wearing ear protection — or clogging your lungs because you do not wear a respirator?

These are just a few of the many risks we all take — the most important step is to take steps to control the risks in our life so we don’t get injured.

We either win or lose when we take risks, but there is often very little to win and everything to lose when it involves our safety and health!
